When the world feels heavy, find your feet.

A woman with red hair sits cross-legged on rocks beside a river, with trees and a small building visible in the background.

It’s hard to ignore the fact that right now, the world feels incredibly heavy.

Between the relentless news cycle and the personal pressures so many of us are carrying, it’s no wonder so many of us are feeling stuck in our heads, scattered, anxious, and emotionally exhausted. When the headlines are full of things we cannot control, and our personal responsibilities feel overwhelming our minds naturally try to think their way to safety.

Unfortunately, it can't be done; instead, we get caught in in mental loops and 'storytelling', thinking of endless 'what-ifs', that trap our nervous systems in relentless fight-or-flight mode. When we are stuck in our heads like this, we end up disconnected from our bodies and from the present moment: the life that is happening right now, in front of us.

This month in the Self Kindness Sanctuary, we are practicing the art of coming Down to Earth: getting out of our overthinking minds, bringing our awareness into our bodies, and grounding back into the present moment.

Grounding isn't about ignoring what’s happening in the world. It’s about building the internal stability needed to witness life without being swept away by it. When we are un-grounded, every piece of bad news feels like a gale-force wind. When we are grounded, we are like a tree: we still feel the wind, but our roots keep us stable and connected to the present moment.

How to come back down to earth today:

1. Focus on your breath: Follow the sensation of the breath coming into and out of your body. Make your exhale longer than your inhale to signal safety to your nervous system.

2. Feel the support: Tune into the sensation of your feet in contact with the ground. Notice the hardness, the texture, and the support of the earth beneath you. If you're sitting, notice all the places your body comes into contact with the chair and feel the support.

3. Bring your awareness back to the here and now: Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.

4. Set a digital boundary: Give yourself a screen break, take some deep breaths and notice how you feel without the digital noise. Bonus points for getting out in nature.

A closing thought:

You cannot help a world in crisis if you are in a state of crisis yourself. Coming back down to earth isn't a luxury or an act of turning away, it is a powerful act of kindness to yourself and others. By regulating our nervous systems and coming back to a place of calm we can respond rather than react, we open to new possibilities and solutions, and we can create the kind of world we want to live in, one kind action at a time.
