I Created Time for Rest, but Couldn't Switch off

A gnarled old tree with a thick, twisted trunk and green leaves stands in a sunlit grassy area.

The Final Hurdle in Self-Kindness

You finally did it! You booked the quiet weekend, you stepped away from the laptop, you found a beautiful place surrounded by birdsong and nature. You have created the opportunity for self kindness and deep rest.

And yet... you can't switch off.

The peace is all around, but your body is still humming with anxiety. Your mind is racing through your to-do list. You've created the space for self kindness, but taking that final step into deep rest and relaxation feels impossible.

If you’ve experienced this, you are not alone. It's a common and frustrating final hurdle on the path to self kindness.

The Challenge of the "Doing" Mind

We spend so much time in doing mode that our brains actually forget how to simply be. We get used to the adrenaline, the stress hormones, and the busyness. When we step away, the nervous system is often still running the marathon, leaving us physically present but mentally and emotionally absent.

The great irony is that when we finally give ourselves permission to rest, our ingrained inner critic often shows up, judging the stillness and whispering, "You should be doing something more productive."

The Solution: Guided Gentle Transition

The self kindness shift isn't just about creating the space; it's about giving your body and mind the tools to gently transition into it.

This is the power of the Self Kindness Sanctuary membership. We provide tools, techniques and gentle support needed for you to fully embrace rest, including:

  • Guided Breathing Practices: Simple, intentional exercises to actively signal to your nervous system that it is safe to switch from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.
  •  Grounding Exercises: Techniques that bring you out of your overthinking mind and anchor you firmly into the present moment.
  • Consistent Practice: The membership gives you a regular rhythm of support (like our monthly focus and live online Sanctuary Sessions) so that gentle relaxation becomes a habit, not a struggle.

It takes more than just a quiet room to find inner peace, it takes intention and process to dial down the mental noise. The Self Kindness Sanctuary provides that path.

If you are ready to move beyond just 'creating space' and start truly 'occupying peace,' our monthly themes and guided practices are waiting to welcome you.

4 Gentle Ways to Re-wire your Brain with Gratitude

A stone cottage stands on a grassy hillside overlooking a rocky stream, all beneath a bright blue sky.

(No forced positivity required)

Gratitude. The word itself can sometimes feel a bit inauthentic or like you're being asked to view the world through rose-tinted glasses. But Gratitude is a powerful self kindness tool that works on a neurological level.

When we live in chronic stress, our brains are hardwired for fight-or-flight, interpreting everything as a threat. This is exhausting and anxiety-inducing. Gratitude is a gentle, yet potent, practice that helps to rewire your brain, acknowledging the positive things that are also going on. It helps bring us back into a state of balance and switch into that healing place of rest-and-digest.

It's not about ignoring what's wrong; it’s about acknowledging the good that is still present.

Practice 1: The "What Would I Miss?" Game:

This is the perfect starting point if you feel too stressed to know where to begin. Imagine that tomorrow you wake up with only the things you feel grateful for today.

Suddenly, you realise it's a miracle to have clean running water at the turn of a tap, a home with shelter and warmth, a comfortable bed, and simple things like electricity and sunshine. This practice instantly pulls you out of a deficit mindset and shows you the quiet abundance you already possess.

Practice 2: Finding Gratitude in the Moment:

This helps you escape your busy thinking mind and become present right now. While you're in the middle of something - watching children play, enjoying a warm cup of tea, or taking a moment on a walk - gently practice feeling gratitude for the good about it.

It doesn't have to be Instagram-perfect. It could be, "I'm grateful for this warm sunshine," or "I'm grateful my body is able to walk today." This simple awareness helps to cement the good feelings right in the here and now.

Practice 3: Seeking the Good in Challenges:

When you're dealing with a difficult situation, this practice involves consciously looking for and noting down the positive things that are still occurring.

When I was deeply worried about my ill dog, I had to actively rewire my thoughts. I started noting every positive, playful, or good thing he did each day. This didn't negate the worry, but it instantly showed me: "This isn't all bad. There is still joy here." It helps you step back and look at the whole picture.

Practice 4: Finding Gratitude for the Hardest Times:

This is the deepest and most challenging practice, so be gentle with yourself. Look back at a particularly difficult or challenging time and try to find something - even one small thing - you can be grateful for now.

For me, the darkest, most stressful period of my life was the catalyst for developing the self kindness practices that became the Self Kindness Sanctuary. I needed to go through that to create something good. You may find that your toughest experiences forged your greatest strengths or led you to exactly where you needed to be.

I invite you to choose just one of these four practices and commit to trying it for the next three days. Notice the difference it makes in your state of being.

The 3 Pillars of Self-Kindness

Beyond the bubble bath

You would be forgiven for thinking of self kindness as an occasional treat, something soft and fluffy: a bubble bath, a favourite takeaway, or an early night. While those moments of respite are lovely, true, lasting self kindness goes so much deeper and, while it requires courage, it is so much more than a temporary fix.

It's a conscious way of living that helps you shift from feeling reactive and depleted to feeling calm, grounded, and safe. Inviting in a life of greater ease and more joy.

The Self Kindness Sanctuary approach isn't about rigid rules or adding to your to-do list; it’s about reconnecting with your own Inner Wisdom - that quiet, kind voice that already knows exactly what you need.

I provide the guidance, but you always choose the path that feels kindest to you. This is achieved by focusing on three pillars:

Pillar 1: Prioritising Your Needs (The Oxygen Mask Principle)

In the rush of modern life, our needs are often the first thing to get pushed down the list. We run on fumes, constantly making withdrawals until our energetic bank account is completely empty.

Self kindness is the act of putting your own oxygen mask on first. This pillar is about gently, consistently placing yourself back on the list. It’s the conscious decision to make loving ‘deposits’ into your energetic bank balance. Filling your own cup first, whether that's five minutes of truly quiet time (no scrolling!), setting a healthy boundary, or making a nourishing meal, so that you can stop running on empty and instead, effortless flow from a place of abundance.

Pillar 2: Doing Things for Your Own Highest Good (The Conscious Choice)

How often do you say 'yes' when every cell in your body is screaming 'no'? Or react in the moment in a way that you know won’t serve you in the long term?

This pillar is about moving from unconscious, habitual reaction to conscious choice.

It asks you to pause and gently consider: Is this choice serving my highest good? Is this choice kind to me?

This involves looking at the routines, relationships, and habits that are depleting or not serving you and having the courage to choose differently. It's the conscious action that creates a life of greater ease and fulfillment, ensuring you consistently choose is in your benefit. Treating yourself like you would a cherished loved one.

Pillar 3: Treating Yourself with Compassion (Quieting the Inner Critic)

You are worthy and deserving of self kindness. You matter. Ignoring Pillars One and Two signals the opposite. Too many of us are so unkind to ourselves and say and do things w would never do to a friend. If you made a mistake, missed a deadline, or had a bad day, would you speak to your best friend the way your inner critic speaks to you? Of course not.

This pillar is also about acceptance and forgiveness. Life is messy. When you inevitably 'mess up' or fall off the self kindness wagon, we support you to quiet that harsh inner voice and gently bring yourself back to self kindness.

This is arguably the most powerful pillar, as it disarms the source of so much stress. You learn to treat yourself with the same warmth, understanding, and kindness you effortlessly extend to others.

By understanding these three pillars, you gain a clear, reliable map for your transformation. It moves self kindness from a vague idea to a powerful, actionable strategy that creates profound, lasting change.

If you're ready to build a strong foundation of self kindness that withstands the chaos of modern life, explore how the Self Kindness Sanctuary can guide you through these three core pillars.

I was running on empty

A woman with curly red hair sits at a table with her eyes closed, hand on chest, meditating in front of an open laptop.

How building a foundation of self kindness changed everything

Modern life doesn't ask us to slow down; it rewards us for speeding up. For years, I lived in that relentless pace, convinced that 'survival mode' was just the reality of a busy life.

But then, everything hit at once: work was incredibly stressful, a family health crisis erupted out of nowhere, and I was supporting others through their own immense challenges. On top of it all, my beloved dog was poorly for months, causing huge amounts of worry and sleepless nights. My own body was protesting with a persistent back injury, so I couldn't even find my usual positive boost from exercise. I felt like a shell of a person, simply hanging on, hoping things would change. But nothing changed, until I realised the only thing I could truly control was me and the choices I could make.

I noticed a pattern of feeling worse in the evenings and at night, when most of the ‘doing’ and distractions of the day had gone and I became aware of a sense of trauma and being on edge in my body. Feeling unsafe, even though I rationally knew I was in no danger.

Around this time, I learned about the body’s Automatic Nervous System and how our fast-paced, ‘always on’ way of life is hijacking the natural balance and keeping us living in a chronic state of ‘Fight or Flight’ - survival mode - rather than spending the majority of time in ‘Rest and Digest’ - the mode in which the body can repair and heal.

I realised I wasn’t prioritising my needs, doing things for my own highest good or treating myself with compassion. I had lost sight of myself in all the doing and worry about others.

The Lifeline: Putting on your own oxygen mask first

I began consciously building a foundation of self kindness, putting my own needs first and getting each day off to the best possible start. It was a conscious choice to take care of myself in the way I was taking care of everyone else.

A solid foundation of self kindness has two powerful functions:

  • It enhances the good times: It allows us to savour and be present, appreciating what we have instead of constantly chasing the next thing.
  • It is an absolute lifeline when times get tough: It provides the inner resilience to navigate crises without completely collapsing under the weight of it all.

The Self Kindness Shift

I took simple steps but they created a huge shift. For me, it included small, non-negotiable moments, like getting out into nature and focussing on my breath. Often, this meant standing in the garden in my pyjamas, a big coat, and wellies, drinking a hot drink! But it was a few minutes of fresh air and nature, dedicated to gathering my thoughts and tuning in to how I felt and what I needed, before the demands of the day began.

This may not be your practice, and that’s the beautiful foundation of the Self Kindness Sanctuary approach: We each know what we need in any given situation. We’ve just forgotten how to listen. The Self Kindness Sanctuary practices simply help you tune in and hear that wisdom over the noise.

By building this foundation over time, everything changed. I was meeting my needs, consistently signalling to my nervous system that I was safe, bringing me back into Rest and Digest. From a place of greater calm I was better able to navigate the chaos, and that difficult time ultimately became the catalyst for creating the Self Kindness Sanctuary.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, constantly on edge, stuck in 'survival mode,' or simply ready to prioritise your needs, your Self Kindness Sanctuary is waiting for you.

Accessibility Information

The owners of this website care that our website is accessible to everyone, regardless of your ability or disability, your race, religion or gender.

This website was originally designed by Access by Design. They have worked in website accessibility since 2006 and have made every effort to ensure that our website is accessible as possible. However, if you find any problems with using the website, please accept our apologies and contact us so we can let them know.

This statement is to give you more information on what they have done to make your experience as accessible as possible.

Using this website

  • The main areas of each web page are defined by Landmarks
  • There is a structured use of Headings
  • Jump menus are provided to allow you to navigate directly to the main content of the page, the Site Map and this Accessibility Statement. These can be reached by using the Tab key after the page has loaded.
  • The Site Map on this website contains links to all the pages on this website in a clean structured list, which may be easier to use.
  • Access by Design have developed a set of accessibility tools that do not rely on 3rd party plugins or overlays, as these make websites less accessible.  We believe that the only way to truly make our websites accessible for all of our visitors, is to include such tools within our code.
  • If you wish to change the text sizes or the screen contrast, please use the options provided under our Accessibility Tools icon. You can reach these with a mouse or using the tab key on your keyboard.
    • ‘Standard text’ will provide a 12px equivalent version on most browsers
    • ‘Large text’ will provide a 16px equivalent version on most browsers
    • ‘Extra Large text’ will provide a 20px equivalent version on most browsers
    • There will be different colour contrast options, such as ‘Blue on Yellow", "Yellow on Blue", "White on Black" and "Black on Orange". These can be particularly helpful for neurodivergent people or those who perceive colours in different ways. All three text sizes may still be selected when any of these options are also chosen.
    • ‘Text Only’ will strip off all our styles and provide a plain text, linear version
    • The Text Only version can also be displayed in the 4 Colour Contrast Options.
  • To resize the text without using the toolbar:
    • In Google Chrome: Customise (3 dots top right) > Zoom > - or +
    • In Edge: Settings and More (3 dots top right) > Zoom > - or +
    • In Firefox: View > Text size > Increase or Decrease
    • In Safari: View > Zoom In or Zoom Out
    • You can also scroll with the wheel of your mouse whilst holding down the control key (Windows) or Apple key (Mac).
  • To use the keyboard instead of the mouse;
    • Use the Tab key to move and browse amongst the menus and links.
    • Pressing ‘Enter’ is the same as clicking a mouse
    • Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move up or down the page or from left to right.
  • There is also a specific Print Style. Should you wish to print off any of the web pages, you will see they will be formatted to ensure they stay one page wide.,
  • All images contain an ALT tag unless decorative, where they are marked as empty.
  • Links make sense out of context. Wherever possible, title tags have also been used to expand on their meaning.
  • Drop-down menu bars to allow you to access child pages from the navigation menu. You will be able to clearly navigate through these by just using the Tab key and the Enter key to make a selection. Each page and child page will light up in turn, just as if a mouse had been used. This is called The Tab Test. If you prefer, please use the site map link for quick and easy browsing.
  • Most of our site has ‘breadcrumbs’ on the top of each page which allow you to retrace your steps and go back to where you started. However, older sites may not have this facility so you may need to use the ‘Back’ button on your browser. Back buttons are usually on the top left hand corner of your browser. By simply clicking on this button you can retrace your steps through the pages you have already viewed on our website. Some keyboards also have a Back Button as part of their options.

General Accessibility

  • This website conforms to the WCAG 2.2 four principles of accessibility and so is: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust
  • Access by Design considered the full range of techniques, including the advisory techniques, as well as to seeking relevant advice about current best practice to ensure that this web content is accessible, as far as possible, to all communities.
  • This website has been thoroughly tested on multiple browsers, platforms and devices
  • This website has been tested using multiple automated accessibility testing software

Web Standards

  • All CSS and XHTML created by Access by Design validate to the document type.
  • Validation does not equal accessibility.
  • If a page on this website does not validate it is almost always because a third-party ‘plug-in’ has needed to be employed. Although try to use only accessible third-parties and we alert designers to accessibility issues, rectifying them is beyond our control.
  • We reserve the right to use the web standards CSS and XHML buttons on this website as all elements within our control validate correctly.

Further Help

Your computer or smartphone may have an integrated feature that will read the content on the screen to you, out loud. These include ChromeVox on Chrome OS, VoiceOver on Mac and Narrator on Windows.

If you use Windows, the two most widely-used screen readers are:

NVDA, a free screen reader.

JAWS, a commercial screen reader that comes with a time-limited demonstration mode.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2

This website was compliant with WCAG 2.2 Priority A and AA Standards when it was launched. However, content updates may have introduced unintentional accessibility errors. These may be related to missing Alt Text, Link Text, Use of Language and Link Behaviour.

There may also be colour contrast issues with the standard view of this website, particularly if the branding is not accessible. Logos themselves are exempt from the WCAG Colour Contrast Guidelines, however the different colour contrast options available in the accessibility toolbar should resolve any contrast issues.

This website also complies with WCAG 2.2 AAA Standards, with the following exception relating to video content. All video content is hosted on YouTube and Vimeo.

  • Sign language interpretation is provided for all prerecorded audio content in synchronized media.
    (Fails under WCAG 2.1 AAA 1.2.6 )

Both video platforms provide automated captioning and transcripts may be downloaded. We look forward to the day that they can also provide signing facilities.

  • This site does not use meta access keys (sometimes called ‘hot keys’). Our research suggests that these are actually detrimental to most keyboard users as they already have their own keys set up which are then overwritten or confused by websites (that do not use a consistent approach). We will review this decision periodically and if research proves otherwise (or technology improves) we will resume these techniques.
  • This site may fail validation on third-party technologies. This is because we have little or no ability to recode these to meet our high accessibility standards. However, we always aim to use plug-ins that are either accessible, increase the accessibility or have simple accessible alternatives. If forced to choose between accessibility features and validation, we have taken the difficult decision to always choose accessibility.

This accessibility statement was originally produced on 31 May 2023 by Clive Loseby.

  • To send, knowingly receive, upload, download, use or re-use any material which does not comply with our content standards below.
  • To transmit, or procure the sending of, any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising or promotional material or any other form of similar solicitation (spam).
  • To knowingly transmit any data, send or upload any material that contains viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time-bombs, keystroke loggers, spyware, adware or any other harmful programs or similar computer code designed to adversely affect the operation of any computer software or hardware.

You also agree:

  • Not to reproduce, duplicate, copy or re-sell any part of our site in contravention of the provisions of our terms of website use (available on this website under the Legal section).
  • Not to access without authority, interfere with, damage or disrupt:

Interactive services

We may from time to time provide interactive services on our site, including, without limitation:

  • Chat rooms.
  • Bulletin boards.
  • Blogs

Where we do provide any interactive service, we will provide clear information to you about the kind of service offered, if it is moderated and what form of moderation is used (including whether it is human or technical).

We will do our best to assess any possible risks for users (and in particular, for children) from third parties when they use any interactive service provided on our site, and we will decide in each case whether it is appropriate to use moderation of the relevant service (including what kind of moderation to use) in the light of those risks. However, we are under no obligation to oversee, monitor or moderate any interactive service we provide on our site, and we expressly exclude our liability for any loss or damage arising from the use of any interactive service by a user in contravention of our content standards, whether the service is moderated or not.

The use of any of our interactive services by a minor is subject to the consent of their parent or guardian. We advise parents who permit their children to use an interactive service that it is important that they communicate with their children about their safety online, as moderation is not foolproof. Minors who are using any interactive service should be made aware of the potential risks to them.

Where we do moderate an interactive service, we will normally provide you with a means of contacting the moderator, should a concern or difficulty arise.
